I voted for Charley Patton.

There's a whole bunch of unissued Vocalion titles that have never surfaced. And if they ever found some of the Paramount metal masters so we could, for instance, hear every nuance of his slide work on "A Spoonful Blues" I would think I had died and gone to heaven.

That said, why no Henry Sloan listed here?

That "Pinned" topic also refreshed my memory about the Paramount discographical info available on-line, and specifically to this page:

Paramount assigned matrix numbers to songs recorded in Grafton, and in Skip James' case, they ran from L-746 ("Devil Got My Woman") to L-766 ("If You Haven't Any Hay").

Interestingly, I am unable to trace L-753, L-757 and L-762 in that sequence, which would suggest a fairly strong likelihood of 3 lost/unissued songs from Skip James (assuming, of course, that he didn't take a break during his recording session and some other singer was assigned those 3 matrix numbers)

I also spot 2 songs that were officially issued using the 2nd take: L-755-2 ("Be Ready When He Comes") and L-760-2 ("Special Rider Blues")

I am also unable to trace L-741 through L-745, which might or might not be Skip James, too. Prior to Skip's L-746, I've spotted L-740, from Bob Robinson.

Finally, I am unable to trace ANY matrix numbers in the 700 series after Skip's last recording at L-766. My guess is that recording picked up later in 1931 using matrix numbers in the 1000 series, based on that on-line discography. I'm doing this during lunch, from on-line sources, at work. It's also quite possible that more info can be found in Godrich-Dixon and Alex van der Tuuk's book that updates what I've written here.

Based on all of this, it seems highly plausible that there's a number of never-found Skip James' Paramount recordings. However, now that I see how few unknown 13000 series recordings there are (far fewer than I recalled), the chances that these unknown James' recordings were actually issued is much lower than I had thought.
