Yes, here it is, as promised...

The All New Early October Blindman's Blues Forum Prize Competition!

What you have to do:

Write a review of a blues CD, concert or DVD in no more than 200 words and post it here. Give us a feel for what the subject of the review is or was like and explain clearly why you think it good, bad or indifferent.

We're looking for vivid writing that really brings the subject to life!

The closing time and date for entries is 10 pm UK time on Sunday 17 October 2004.

The Blindman's Blues Forum's very own professional blues reviewer, BluesWriter, has kindly agreed to act as judge of the competition and will select the winning entry.

The prize for the winner is a Blues Matters CD of their choice.

Right, now start sending in those blues reviews!

As a co-moderator on this particular portion of The BLINDMAN'S BLUES FORUM I propose that we immediately 'rule out' anything from B-Dub (Hey - the guy's a pro!!!).... We don't want the rest of our members intimidated!!!! (I'll award B-Dub something for being ousted!!!!)

Fret not, Fret! What we're after here is a vivid sense of the music, recording or performance being reviewed. Your choice of words is going to be the important thing and the force and clarity of your review. Provided that your sense is clear, spelling is entirely secondary.

Go on, give it a go! Show us what you can do!

Well, I'm no writer, but I'm submitting "something"

. So folks, c'mon and submit yours--I KNOW many of you are better at writing a review than I am!

It was not easy to keep this to no more than 200 words, so I set up my own method of word counting: Did not include the title in my total word count; names, song titles, and hyphenated words are considered one word. Sorry, but I HAD to!!

THE SETTING:
Seating at Red Rocks is unusual--general admission is smack-dab in the front about 5 feet from the stage, so getting there a couple hours early is essential. A bother? The beauty of Red Rocks overrides all.

Good physical condition is advantageous since climbing the access ramp is reminiscent of mountain hiking! Visible in the distance is the Denver skyline and the beautiful surrounding mountains featuring red rock (what else!) formations. Mountain air and clear night sky, where virtually every star appears visible, add to the surreal atmosphere.

THE BAND:
Onstage at 9:00 P.M., The ABB exploded with "Revival", and it was! Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes are a powerhouse guitar duo delivering the goods with staples "Statesboro Blues," "Stormy Monday," and "Dreams" ala Duane Allman. Superimposing the band image with footage of the founding brother cast upon the rocks at stage-rear added to that "Duane" feeling. Nice touch.

The second set provided more of Gregg's superb vocals, the guitar duo, and that wonderful rhythm section (Oteil Burbridge/bass; Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, and Marc Quinones/drums) conjuring up "Midnight Rider," "Soulshine," and Warren Haynes' soulful rendition of "The Same Thing."

Night's end saw Gregg transfixed--gazing skyward at a flurry of shooting stars; speechlessness, reverence, and silent wonder before closing with a 20-minute "Mountain Jam."

Nice work MB....may have to have you do a CD Review for the Washington Blues Society's Bluesletter (Maybe Nick's new one - as soon as I get my hands on a copy....)

That's a shame. I'd love to read your review of that Hendrix gig back in 69. I never got to see him in person and would be interested in your memories of what he was like that day.
