HI All,
Reading on page 50 of the book "blues traveling", they mention the love triangle between Louise Johnson, Patton and Son House on a trip up north to grafton for recording. The author mentions that the tension boiled over in some of Louise Johnsons recording sessions and the men can be heard yelling and arguing in the background. So can anyone tell me which songs that this can be heard on? This would be ca. 1930.

Just curious and I know this is easy for some of you guys!

The aren't arguing. They're shouting encouragement to her, since she was feisty and many of her lyrics are pretty racy.

Cheseborough doesn't say the men were arguing, he says they were yelling during the session but it's hard to tell if they were encouraging her singing or being rude - they were doing both... encouraging her and being sexually expressive with her during the recording of All Night Long Blues and On The Wall. Louise recorded very little but she's well-worth checking out. Her barrelhouse piano style was top-notch, and the numbers with the guys egging her on are loads of fun.

... well, I don't know if this helps any ... I've posted this before here at the forum when the discussion about the Paramount sessions of House/Patton/Brown/Johnson comes up ... I never heard or read about any 'arguing' between Patton and House ... in the studio ... about the Ms. Johnson's 'switcheroo' ... it was just one of those (blues) things ... that happen ... when a woman changes her mind ... and the fellas didn't have a falling out about it ... and were encouraging her during the sessions ... by 'yelling' ... 'being rude' ...
... and please keep in mind that it is well documented that Paramount kept their recording artists 'well lubricated' if the artists so desired ... and familiarity with the also well documented 'habits' of the players involved ... I would guess that they scene in the studio was ... quite a party ... in Grafton, WI ... a long ways from Clarksdale.

Thanks lloads guys, I knew their'd be some great info on this I did listen to clips of some of her songs on the Charley Patton set. Amazon doesn't seem to carry any individual cds for her, but I do note, the encylo of blues makes mention of several compilations she's on.

There are only 5 recordings (4 songs, including two takes of All Night Long Blues), so issuing a single CD of Louise would make no sense for any label.

But it is incredible stuff. I wish she had recorded more. I wish somebody knew what happened to her, she essentially vanishes sometime in the 1930s from almost everyone's radar screen.
