My current fave is Frank Rosolino:)

I'll single out [B][U] Free For All w/ harold Land, Victor Feldman, Leroy Vinnegar, Stan Levey. CD kicks off with a romping version of LOve For Sale, succeded by a gorgeous ballad reading of "Twilight" and the infectious bop line Chrisdee.

Frank's chops are in outstanding shape. I really appreciate his wit and intelligent phrasing. etc.

I'm not really qualified to say one way or another, but I really like Kid Ory's playing on that Louis Armstrong Hot Fives and Sevens box. In fact, I kifed a riff or two from him!

That gives you something in common with: Curtis Fuller, Bob Brookmeyer, J. J. Johnson, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, George Lewis, Bennie Green and Slide Hampton, to name just a few!

I was thinking that I've never been much of a trombone fan, and then realized that's not really true. In fact, some of the first music that turned me on when I was a little kid featured the trombone. My father had a ten inch LP by Bunk Johnson, simply called Bunk Johnson, recorded sometime in the 40's. There was a cover of "Ory's Creole Trombone" on it that featured Turk Murphy on the trombone. When I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, I would beg my father to play that tune for me over and over

I like all the usual suspects, but my latest find is Papo Vazquez. Really fine player, writer, bandleader, and arranger. His "At the Point" albums are excellent examples of progressive latin jazz that still manage to groove like mad.

Rosolino was the master of the 'bone, no doubt. Over the years I've played his records for many people and asked them to identify the instrument and almost all answered "valve trombone" 'cuz when he played it sounded like one. Frank also was a brilliant improviser and could play anything put in front of him. I was fortunate enough to see him a number of times and he always blew everyone away. He's heard to great advantage on an old Contemporary album (old? Contemporary...okay!) "Coop" with Bob Cooper heading an octet and other small groups. Also, many recordings with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. And, never overlook his work with Stan Kenton..."New Concepts Of Artistry in Rhythm" featuring "Frank Speaking" is just mind boggling.

...I"ll second the vote for J. J. Johnson as well as his frequent partner, Kai Winding, two brilliant musicians who could play the horn.

Milt Bernhart with Kenton was also a favorite of mine as he was of Nelson Riddle and Frank Sinatra. Is there a young trombone player who doesn't know his solo on "I've Got You Under My Skin" with 'Ol Blue Eyes.

Juan Tizol, composer of "Caravan" was another fine trombonist who Sinatra and Riddle used frequently. Juan played with Ellington and upon leaving joined Harry James for two or more decades until his death. He played valve mostly and had a most unusual yet beatiful tone.

...as for tone and just about everything else (improvisation, sight reading, etc.) Carl Fontana was truly great. One of the best section leaders in big band history.

No one has mentioned Bill Watrous yet so I will. My favorite Watrous was his Big Band THe Manhattan Wildlife Refuge-an Lp in the 70s that alas-to my knowledge never has or will appear on CD -due to Sony/BMGs policy of no fresh reissues.

Let me also cast my votes for both Curtis Fuller and JJ Johnson. Curtis especially played on a number of classic Blue Note sessions. A name I believe that hasn't been mentioned up to now is Grachan Moncur. I was recently introduced to his work via a session he did for Jackie McLean called "Destination Out". This is a guy I want to delve into abit more deeper.

Another great one we're forgetting was Bill Harris who played with the Woody Herman band awaaay back. Woody always said that Bill was the guy all modern trombone players patterned themselves after, (he had range, tone, technique...had it all.) and...

...a later Herman 'bone player was the brilliant Jimmy Pugh who played on the band in the seventies (or early eighties...). Jimmy often played old charts that had been written for Bill Harris and that meant that Woodrow really liked him. Too bad that Jimmy came along too late to make a real name for himself as the bands were pretty well forgotten by then...except for a few diehard fans. Had Pugh come along earlier he would have been very well known....as a matter of fact I've never understood why Bill Harris isn't mentioned more often...he was marvelous.
