How about some thoughts on Horace? While I own some 60's sessions on Blue Note, he's an artist I really need to beef up on. Song For My Father, The Jody Grind and The Cape Verdean Blues are the only sessions I own right now although I should receive this week Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers a mid 50's session I've heard great things of. So add your thoughts and make a few recommendations while you're at it. Thanks.

Horace is the man! I like so much of what he's done, it's hard to just give you a few. These have been in heavy rotation lately...

Finger Poppin' (Archetypical hardbop ala' Horace w/Blue Mitchell & Junior Cook)
The Stylings of Silver (Beautiful version of My One and Only Love worth the price of the album alone)
Doin' The Thing (Energetic live Horace)
Horace Silver and The Jazz Messengers (It's the got Kenny & Hank, you need it!)
Horace Silver Trio (Early Horace, already showing he's got the goods)

Blowin' the Blues Away-
Milt Jackson Quartet- (I think it was reissued as Soul Pioneers- Presteige. It is basically the MJQ, only with Horace instead of John Lewis.)

Here's an enthusiastic second for "Blowin' The Blues Away." Also, be sure you have one with "Doodlin'" and "Cookin' At The Continental" (the source for the intro on Albert King's "Natural Ball").

Yeah- I love Horace Silver too.
Ive been looking for the cd with Doodlin on it, but I cant find it- except on an expensive Blue Note Box....

This is the album with Doodlin' on it. It was mentioned by Sundog above. It is an absolutely classic album, a must have if you like the Jazz Messengers or Horace Silver. This same dynamite first edition of the Jazz Messengers (Blakey, Silver, Mobley, Dorham, Watkins) also recorded two fine Blue Note albums live at the Cafe Bohemia.

Horace Silver fans also need to pick up his first Blue Note trio album that has a similar looking cover to the above:

Horace Silver made consistently excellent albums from this 1953 trio recording to the 1968 Serenade for a Soul Sister. You really can't go wrong picking up any of them.

Horace is surely among the top five all-time jazz composers, for me, and every era other than the "acid pot pills" early 70s should be heard. Its impossible for me to identify a favorite Horace album or a favorite Horace front line. Really all of it belongs in any jazz fan's collection.

Agreed. I have many Horace Silver albums, and love them all.

I like the 1956 Art Blakey The Jazz Messengers record with Hank Mobley, tenor sax; Don Byrd, trumpet; and Doug Watkins, bass; a lot.

Haven't managed to hear a bad Horace Silver record so far.

If I absolutely had to have a favorite jazzman it would be Horace. His music always puts a smile on my face.

Everybody looks good at the starting line. Get on your mark,get ready but you better keep this in mind. You can hit the ground running like you're shot from a gun but going the distance is the hard part son. Everybody looks good at the starting line.

Hello,

Further Explorations by the Horace Silver Quintet (1958) is a good choice -- this one includes rarely-heard ensemble pieces like Pyramid, The Outlaw, and Moon Rays. I heard Art Farmer's group play that latter tune with his group in the San Francisco Bay Area, about ten years back. Even the ensemble warm-ups were fantastic!

There's a late 60s session by Horace called "You Gotta Take a Little Love", which includes several great performances -- "It's Time", "The Belly Dancer", and one by Bennie Maupin called "Lovely's Daughter". There's also an unusual tune in 6/4 called "Brain Wave" which has writing not typical of Horace -- more chromatic and polytonal, to my ears.

Both of these sessions are on Blue Note.

I went ahead and bought Horace's autobiography on Amazon.com today, despite the inconclusive reviews. I also looked for a CD with the piece called "Speculation", but wasn't able to find it; it's a medium-tempo groove tune, in Eb. As I recall, Horace recorded it on a Gigi Gryce session.

As I already mentioned in the What Are You Listening To thread, I received Horace Silver and The Jazz Messengers in the mail today and was pretty impressed. Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley are on this session and as you know, you can't go wrong there. My next purchase most likely will be:

That's a good session. Grabs you right from the first down beat and never lets up. My dad played the heck out of that record when I was a little kid. Probably the first Horace I ever heard.
