In Many R&B Songs Directly Before A Solo begins The Singers Shout "Hoy" Or "Hoy, Hoy"

I know in Spanish Hoy means "Today"

But does anyone does have any idea of what those R&B singers meant when they shouted it?

(Good Examples Of This Are On Stick McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo De O De" And Goree Carter's "Hoy Hoy")

What is Hoy Hoy?

It's an expression that was commonly used in R&B lyrics from the 1940's until about 1951. It started with Cab Calloway's record "Hoy Hoy," in 1937, and gained more fame with the platter "The Honeydripper" by Joe Liggins, which kept the #1 spot for 18 weeks in the summer of 1945. In the record, Hoy is repeated many times during the bridge. Between 1945 and 1951, hundreds of R&B records included the phrase in the lyrics, but after 1951 the expression wasn't heard much, since by then everything was changing over to doo-wop vocal groups, and the teenagers probably didn't think the expression was cool anymore. The origin of the phrase "Hoy Hoy" in black music of the 1940's in unknown, at least by us.

The Hoy Hoy website is for enthusiasts of hard-rocking R&B from the years immediately before doo wop and rock 'n' roll. Hoy Hoy offers a double-length casette, and two CD's, containing most of the songs from this website, in full-length of course.

I guess I am not very R&B literate, because hte only record I remeber hearing Hoy Hoy on is Howling Wolf's "This Is It, Look What You Get" which probably Willie Dixon wrote, The lyrics at one point say Hoy Hoy I'm the boy.
As far as Hoy meaning Today in Spanish, well, actually the sound of the Spanish word hoy is more like English Oy, not Hoy, because the H is silent. The closest thing in Spanish to Hoy (with the H sound) is probably joya which means jewel.

It could have been the Scottish Blues connection,
Hoy is an island of the Orkney Isles.

Or a reference to another Scottish connection
Alexander Graham Bell who answered the telephone
with Hoy Hoy instead of Hello.

On the otherhand maybe not.

I think he meant the same thing Frank Sinatra meant when he sang shoobie doobie doo.

Or the same thing Muddy Waters meant when he sang, "Oh well, Sure enough" on I'm A Man.

in other words , do you really expect it means anything in particular?

Isn't it just a filler utterance for musical phrasing that does not have any intended meaning??

(Seth, Yeah, 300 pounds, I am lousy at remembering song titles so I sometimes use a prominent line of the lyrics instedd of the official song title.)
