I think one of the things jazz has going for it that will keep it alive forever is the standards.
In the blues you got the standard 12 bar format, which players of all types will always have a common meeting ground. Very cool about the blues
.
Jazz has the standards. Those tunes that when players get together offer them a common meeting ground as well. In all styles from Ballads to hard bop to blues based jazz and beyond.
Some of my favorite ballad jazz standards.
Moonlight in Vermont.
Misty
My Funny Valentine
When Sunny Get's Blue.
Some of my favorite bop standards
Giant Steps
Hot House
Straight, No Chaser
Cherokee.
Four
Stella by Starlight
Donna Lee
Blues type standards.
All Blues..
St. James Infirmary
5 lb. Blues.
Take 5
Not a lot of standards came out of the fusion era. At least not that I'm aware of..
Maybe "Teentown", 500 miles high?? and a few others..
Most of these "Standards" are studied and played by most jazz cats..(The fast Bop tunes I struggle with though..
But I really admire someone who can play "Giant Steps" at 290 BPM, just tear it up..
Just curious what some of your favorite standards might be??? And if you hate one tell us why.
(One that I can't stand is "Girl from Impamena"..Just heard it too many times through the years
