There were artists that recorded only one song. And I don't mean about the Lomax or any such kind of recordings. Lomax wanted to have as many artists as he can , he didn't mind recording one song from an artist.

But the commercial record companies, why would they record only one side when a 78 needs two sides ?

All the above written is in my opinion unless it is someone else's opinion, or a fact.

so they can make a record with two A sides, with different artists and promote both in one go I think.

Just a guess

Well, within short notice, I tell them where I�ve been.
What they are missing and what they�ve never seen.
Try to sell myself no matter how to.
Even try tell them black men stole my blues.
But somehow, nobody ever heard of me.

Other possible reasons: that only one song was released doesn't always necessarily mean that only one song was recorded. The original master of the other song may have been damaged or even lost. Or the record company thought that only one of the artist's sides had any commercial potential, the other one(s) simply not being musically good enough, or included some sounds that shouldn't be there recorded by mistake (a sound technican started to cough and sneeze or a train passed by or something)

Volvo, I think you nailed it. It make sense that they recorded more but some was destroyed or not good for commercial purposes.

The only train I remember was on Son House field recording for Lomax. I doubt if such could happen in studios like Paramount , Victor or Okeh.

All good reasons, but I have seen apparently "commercial" 78's with only one side recorded, the other side all smooth and shiny. Maybe they were not commercial porducts, maybe they were self-produced or private or somerhing, but the labels looked professional.

Probably not at the permanent studios, but some of the commercial record companies also set up temporary studios for recording local talent in hotels etc.

But don't take that train to litteral - I mentioned it just as an example of something that could ruin a recording. And I chose that example because I have heard the same Son House Library of Congress recordings you mention.
