I've always enjoyed and gone to see Sabby Lewis. He was a regular at Boston's old Savoy.

Duke Ellington and Count Basie line my shelves, but there are a countless number of others. Jellyroll Morton I love. Fletcher Henderson is up there.

Can you name some more?

I'm not into jazz much at all,but back in the seventies we went to Edinburgh to see Buddy Rich and his band,the opening act was the Teddy Wilson Trio,Teddy was a superb pianist that night,blew us all away with his sheer virtuosity.

I met Buddy Rich on the road once...What an amazing guy !

I used to listen to Mc Coy Tyner and Gene Harris ..verydifferent players ...both GREAT !!

I have always been amazed by George Gershwin, not exactly jazz until you really listen to Rhapsody In Blue. An incredible piece of work.

I love listening to Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk et al, but the guy who always brings a huge grin to my face is Fats Waller. He had such a delicate touch! His huge hands could pump out wonderful thumping bass lines and slamming chords when required, but his delicate and flowing melodic lines just ripple with tuneful invention and good humour. As for his singing and his spoken comments, they just crease me up.

I've always been partial to Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Dodo Marmarosa, Horace Silver and Ahmad Jamal.
Ahmad is having a homecoming in a couple of weeks by the way. He's still going pretty strong into his mid 70's from what I hear. I'm just really begining to fully enjoy piano trios and am looking forward to Jamal. Another favorite, Herbie Hancock will be in town this Winter.

I have spent days trying to decide what Blues cd's to buy, and have just read a reveiw of Keith Jarrett's new one---The Out of Towners, it says it's Blues/ish---sorted!

Keith is one of the more unusual talents in the last 35 years of jazz. I like his music. He plays a lot of classics and with his trio they've been interpreting standards. If I were you, I'd buy the cd.

I'd also add Errol Garner to that list, and his tune Misty is a huge jazz standard with a really pretty melody and chord changes.

For listening to the man and his piano unadorned or in a sparse setting then Thelonious Monk is my hero, he has such a fucked-up sense of timing it borders on genius. For a prolonged contribution as a piano playing writer & bandleader then Herbie Hancock wins for me. Even Miles wasn't quite so able to mould himself to the zeitgeist.

Anyway, I've mentioned him in another thread but no thread on jazz piano can pass without a mention of "Fatha", Earl Hines. He had such a dynamic touch and everytime I listen it sounds like he's playing with his piano, like a child with a toy. Joyful without being frivolous.

Erroll Garner is a too often overlooked keyboardist and that's a damned shame as he was one of the true giants. In his autobio Dizzy Gillespie talks about the greatness of Erroll as do many others. If nothing else everyone should own his Columbia set, "Concert By the Sea" as personally I'd list it as essential to any serious jazz collection. A special favorite from the Columbia "Errol Garner Gems" is "Laura" with which I fell in love in high school and still rank as one of the best takes on that classic song.

We all know about Bud, and Monk, Keith, and the like but how the wonderful (and durable) Hank Jones? We just lost him a little less than two years ago and did he ever disappoint? Rhetorical question. On Artist House, the fine jazz subsidary of A & M started by Herb (TJB) Alpert, I have an LP by Art Pepper with all-star backing with Hank contributing mightily to tracks such as a sublime "Star Dust." Giant, the whole Jones family.

GEORGE CABLES! Man, I'm here to say that the incredible George is someone every jazz fan should get to know. I believe he's still active both with his own groups and with other leaders. I treasure many of his solos with the Art Pepper Quartet and especially with emphasis on the album of duets he did with Art...just killer stuff.

And, again let me just say...Hampton Hawes. Exceptional and I love his albums on Contemporary with the trio...wow!

A Google indicates you're right on Hot Ptah and I couldn't be happier to see that. For some reason I had it in my head that I'd read of his death. Glad to be wrong and it looks as if he's still active at around 90...just a kid.
