I was thinking about... Sunnyland Slim. Because almost every Chicago Bluesman from mid-1940's was shaped in the hands of Sunnyland Slim. What do you think?

I suppose that Sunnyland is a good choice because I've always enjoyed his singing and piano playing of the blues for many years.

That title has been designated to many singers, from Junoir Wells to Teddy Lang. In the long run, I think it's going to be a matter of opinion.

Well, a godfather could be one who has a special relationship to another person, or a generation. I think that could be said of Chicago bluesmen. Now, Marvel mentioned Sunnyland Slim, but personally I favor Muddy. I heard someone on the web mention Junior Wells. Bottom line - it'll come down to one's opinion.

Big Bill Broonzy ... is reported to have taken many blues artists in Chicago who were "fresh from the South" under his wing ... let them 'crash' at his home, introduce them around town, and help them find work.

I am with Fred on this...it is a matter of opinion, and, in my opinion Sunnyland Slim never rose high on my list....Godfather? Second cousin at best.

Muddy and the Wolf defined "Chicago Blues" and pretty much dominated the scene for a looonng time. I would rather hear either of them fart under a blanket, than hear Sunyland's greatest opus! Of course...that is just my opinion!

I would say Muddy. Not just for his musical influence, but in that he was generous to helping other blues artist, such as Buddy Guy, get their start...even sincerely offered to help Tampa Red financially in his later years although Tampa was too proud to accept. To me Muddy is the man! He was the Budda of the blues.

I think that Albert King might have thought he was the Godfather of the blues.
When I was on the same aircraft with Albert to Mexico City around 1991 or so he and everyone in his entourage had on satin jackets with "Godfather of the Blues" and his picture embroidered on the back.
Did anyone else ever see Albert in this jacket?
I never could figure that one out.

Sunnyland didn't encourage as many youngsters as Big Bill did. But he was a patriarch of the scene for sure, and Robert Jr. Lockwood and Luther Tucker are just two of the many who knew they could find a place to stay and a car to borrow thanks to Sunnyland when they were in town. Tucker told me that his mother was a friend of Sunnyland, and when Tucker got released from the juvenile detention home, she took him in tears to Sunnyland and said "keep my baby out of jail," so Sunnyland put Tucker on stage with him and started by nodding at him when it was time for him to play something.

My favorite Sunnyland Moment came in the studio when I was producing a Lacy Gibson album in '82. We were working on a fast song in B natural; Sunnyland gestured me over and asked "how much I got to pay you to get out of this key?"

However, Sunnyland was GREAT at what he did as both a pianist and singer, and Jim O'Neal and I called the way he inspired guitarists to sound their best "the Sunnyland Effect." Those Sunday nights at B.L.U.E.S. over many years are especially fond memories.

I sure wish Universal would put the Sunnyland LP on Bluesway "Plays The Ragtime Blues" (with the Aces and Walter Horton) onto CD...

The late Mae Cramer used to play some of Sunnyland late at night. I gotta tell you, I loved hearing him sing just accompanying himself at that piano. Truly some great stuff. Thanks, again.

I can think of at least 4 blues artists
who would likely consider Sunnyland as a godfather of sorts,

drummer S P Leary,

singer Big Time Sara,

guitarist Steve Freund,

and pianist Barrelhouse Chuck Goering.

I too have fond memories of wonderful musical experiences with Sunnyland at the center, Elsewhere on Lincoln to the Flying Fox on 69th.
