Do any of you know of any people around now that play the old country blues? I don't mean people that have the odd song on an album. But people who play just with guitar and vocals, maybe the odd harmonica, but that's it.

These 3, although quite young, are good old time country blues players,
and they are just 3 drops in a very large bucket.
I was reluctant to pick out and name these 3 because I don't want to be construed as slighting in any waty the many others out there, several of them BBF members, who keep thos old sounds quite alive.
There are many, but they are not very well known because good old time country blues does not, however good it sounds, make much of a commercial ripple these days.

There's Son Henry, another forumite.

All of those cats play old time blues done acoustically.

I heard a great live session on the Paul Jones Show on BBC Radio 2 last week from a wonderful lady ragtime player called Mary Flower .
I'd never heard of her before, but boy, can can she play!

I think Mary Flower is also a fine folk blues artist. I actually have her on now singing "Raise The Devil" and "Papa's On The Housetop. Yeah, she is good.

Yeah, that's a good one. My personal favorite is Wild Cow, man, that acoustic bass fiddle from LittleJoe's partner really drives the thing along.

It is so good to have these electronic connections to globally scattered musicians keeping the old sounds alive. It helps me to counter the sad feeling I get when I think about how most of the people are dead and gone who used to like my playing at a barbecue or house party Sometimes it feels lonesome to be into making music that most consider obsolete, I am so glad to have this internet connection to a few who still not only like it but play it too, way better than I can play it.

Another favorite of mine is Dr. David Evans - his CD, "Matchbox Blues," is fantastic.

I've been listening to Louis "Gearshifter" Youngblood a lot lately. I believe that he's a descendant of Tommy Johnson. Scott Barretta (who produced it) gave me a copy when he visited me last month - I don't know if how widely available the CD (Gearshifter SMP3220) but somewhere like Cathead should have it.

It's a really enjoyable selection of songs, mostly covers but not the standard acoustic blues repertoire: it goes from Tommy Johnson to Johnnie Taylor and Omar Cunningham with some A C Reed along the way.

Well worth tracking down...
