Posts: 400 Jul 17 06 12:51 AM	Tags : None Where does Big Joe Turner fit in anywhere? I never hear too much if at all about him on the Forum, but I think he's great. One of the first cd's I ever got was his greatest hits and I played that too death. Is it that his music not neatly fit in to the blues category, too Jazzy, to R&B or am I wrong to think he's blues. Deepest Blue Posts: 30580 Jul 17 06 4:48 PM	To me he's as blues as Roomful (who he recorded with, highly recommended), as Rock'n'roll as Bill Haley, as jazz as Jimmy Rushing (who really was a blues singer), as jump as anyone from the West Coast today. Posts: 320 Jul 17 06 7:36 PM	I saw Big Joe in 1966, everyone was about to fall asleep after Robert Pete Williams had done his best, in spite of the poor system, to capture the attention of the audience. What a stupid idea to feature Robert Pete's confidential mood just after Junior Wells, in front of such a large audience! But what a shock when Big Joe appeared on stage... a real storm, even though Fred Below was obviously tired and Little Brother Montgomery had incredible trouble adding a chord here and there. Imagine a huge bottle of Champagne dressed in a flashy yellow suit, right in the middle of the stage, with two penguin's wings swinging on each side! We didn't know much about him at the time, and felt we were faced with a kind of highly professional rock'n'roll singer deeply rooted in early jazz... or something like that , but what a voice! Just vaguely disappointed that the one who stole the show was neither an old-time country blues musician, nor an electric Chicago blues star. P.S. And Ren�, thinking it took six years - and finding you on this forum - until I learnt that you too loved Jimmy Rushing!

Without "Shake, rock and roll" there would be no rock and roll, no rockabilly, and no shaking either. He was certainly massively important in the birth of Rock and Roll, him and Louis Jordan ( I agree with you Rene, he probably did it first, but there are so many opinions on 'who started it' that I am loathe to go there. ) Just don't forget, Roy Brown, Amos Milburn, Joe Liggins, Ike Turner, T-Bone Walker, Wynonie Harris, and others It's an era of music I find really exciting when you think of what came after. An example of the diversity in blues, you'll have to decide for yourself whether it was r&b, jazz/blues, jump, rock&roll, because often in this case, defining boundaries remain fuzzy. During this era he was part of the exciting Kansas City sound which included the likes of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Jay McShann, Jimmy Rushing, Jimmy Witherspoon, etc.
