As a retired policeman who put in almost 30 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), I've seen more than my share of motor vehicle collisions of the motorcycle, car and truck varieties. I've had children die in my arms because parents didn't have the proper child restraints; I've removed body parts from trees as a result of motorcyclists riding too fast for road and traffic conditions; I've seen the aftermath of car versus trucks and the like. If motorcyclists feel that it is their right to ride without helmets that is their choice albeit self-centred and stupid; consider your family and loved ones before making a self-centred choice not to wear a helmet. Even then, becoming involved in a collision with another vehicle, a deer or whatever will likely result in serious injury or death. Driving your car or other vehicile without wearing a fastened seatbelt is also a stupid and self-centred choice. Again, consider those who will be stuck with looking after you when you are incapacitated and your life as you once knew it is gone. As a triathlete, I am forever harping on those cyclists who refuse to wear helmets while riding. True, if you get smucked by a car or truck chances are you will be toast, but at least if you fall while riding and smack your head on a curb your cycling helmet will offer some protection to your noodle.

I make absolutely no apolgies for my diatribe in this regard. If you don't care about yourself that's your business, but consider those around you who have to live with your choices in life. I certainly feel for Roethlisberger's family.
