Are there any serious Sleepy fans on this forum?
He is one of my all time favorites. Along with Hammie Nixon, I think they had the best harmonica-guitar duo of all times.

I don't know wether I'm a "serious" fan but I sure dig his music. He did excellent music with Yank Rachel, Son Bonds and Jab Jones. The songs with Nighthawk were more Nighthawk's harmonica play talent IMO than Estes usual high quality of songwriting and singing. The stuff with Nixon was good, but both were better IMO with Bonds than with each others. The Newport song recorded in the 1960's I heard on the Newport 3-cd was also awsome IMO, I'm sure it didn't sound like anything else.

All the above written is in my opinion unless it is someone else's opinion, or a fact.

Yeah, one of my all-time favourite tracks is his Special Agent but I have a few albums-worth of other stuff too. Vernita blows me away every time I hear it -- pure emotion.

As someone said earlier, not sure I'm a 'serious' fan -- don't have everything he ever recorded -- but I certainly recognise him as a major contributor to the blues canon.

Apparently he earned the nickname 'Sleepy' for his propensity to doze off if nothing much was happening?

Special Agent (Railroad Police) is also of my my very favorite recordings, not just of Sleepy John Estes, but in general. I never heard it until maybe a year ago and already I have listened to it hundreds of times. The guitar is just wonderful, and the lyrics brilliantly present a realistic portrayal of an aspect of the hobo life.

I don't think he dozed off a lot when things weren't going on, I think he had a physiological condition of drooping eyelids.

If it weren't for his high pitched voice, especially on the most latter recordings, he would be one of my big favorites, but even so, that Special Agent I listen too A LOT. It finds its way onto almost every private compilation CD I burn.
